COMIX WELL SPRING/GREKO PRINTING

Another very well reviewed digital printer is Comic Well Spring, a division of Greko Printing. Up to this point we haven’t had any experience with them but we will try them out in the future since we’ve heard many good things about their quality and prices.

If you’re thinking of going through the direct market route or your crowdsourcing efforts result in hundreds of reward “orders”, your best option will be offset printing. Quality is even better than the already good results of digital printing and the price per unit difference is huge once you go over a certain number of copies. Of all the companies we have contacted that offer offset printing both in the US and abroad, we are leaning towards using PrintNinja when the time comes. They print the stuff in China but also have offices in the US which makes communications and logistics easier. We have examined a package of samples, which they will send upon request, and found the quality outstanding. Their printing price is hard to beat, an advantage which is sadly diminished once you add the shipping cost from China, although it’s still cheaper than most. They provide a price calculator on their website that let’s you know your costs in seconds.

How to Self-Publish Your Own Comic Book
Tony Caputo (1997)

In spite of being quite dated, this book is very useful, just the section on contracts is worth the price. Get this one, you won’t regret it.

Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels
Scott McCloud (2006)

This one is a keeper, a very useful book, done in sequential art, that deals mainly with the storytelling aspect of making a comic. It isn’t a drawing, lettering or coloring manual, but it does have tips on each of those aspects and many more. Most of the book isn’t and won’t be dated for a long time since it covers concepts that are universal to the sequential art form, only those chapters on technology will get out of phase. If you’re making a comic, you want to read this one.

Make Comics Like the Pros: The Inside Scoop on How to Write, Draw, and Sell Your Comic Books and Graphic Novels
Greg Pak – Fred Van Lente (2014)

A good introduction to the comic making process with an emphasis on writing and the creative process. It’s weakest aspect is the selling and marketing part which is shallow at best.
